If you’ve been following me on Instagram lately you know that I recently painted the exterior of our home. Well, part of it. I wanted to do a DIY modern exterior update that wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg, so paint seemed like the perfect solution! First, though, let’s start with a few “before” photos.

When my husband bought this house, it had this dark, red trim color. I actually really liked it, and our original plan was to paint it the same color. Well, fast forward and the original paint we had leftover was totally skunked, so we knew we had to buy new. I knew I wanted something that would help modernize the front of our house, so I went to Pinterest in search of inspiration to go with our stone exterior. Here is some of what I found.
The biggest theme I found was that stone exteriors are often paired with black and dark gray. When my husband did some research of his own, he found the same thing, so off to Lowe’s we went! After looking at a few different colors, we settled on Peppercorn by Sherwin Williams. It was the perfect gray to do our DIY modern exterior update, and yet still kept with the current state of our home.
Please ignore our dead grass and focus on the new trim, door and shutter color! At first I wasn’t sure I liked how the gray looked with our roof, but it has really grown on me and now I’m loving it! Although, now that we have this modern paint, I’m itching to redo our siding. A project for another day I guess.
Painting this door was a pain in my butt. First of all, I hate painting. So much. Second of all, I used a mini paint roller and my hand was cramping up from the thing. The roller worked very well, and it ended up looking great, but I may have broken a sweat while doing it.
Overall I am very happy with how this project turned out. My husband is happy because he loves gray, and I’m happy that our house looks a little less 1950-ish. We’re still throwing around the idea of new siding, or even painting it. We also need to figure out what to do with our paint railings. As you all know, one project just seems to lead to another.
Thanks for stopping by, my friend! Until next time!
Can you share the name of the stone in the picture of the house with black shutters and windows
Hi Tom,
Unfortunately that was just an inspiration picture that I found from Pinterest, so I’m not sure. Best of luck on your renovation!
